You may have seen the beautiful movie “Into the Wild” and if you did, you certainly fell in love with its soundtrack. It is not a compilation of already known songs, that will make sure the movie is well supported musically. The songs were especially written for “Into the wild” by the talented Eddie Vedder. It’s no wonder to find him on that movie directed and produced by Sean Penn, they already met in “I am Sam” where Sean Penn was an actor and Eddie Vedder actually managed to make a proper cover of a Beatles Song (You got to hide your love away), his rocker voice helping a lot.
The writing of the album was made almost simultaneously with the movie, influence by the story and the first takes of the movie. “There were fewer choices. The story was there and the scenes were there” Vedder said, the songwriting process “grew” as Penn would ask him for more material. The movie is about Christopher McCandlessa, a 22-year old man who brilliantly graduated from university and decides to leave it all behind for a while (car, job opportunities, savings, family). This adventure into the wild is marvelously accompanied by the words and melodies of Eddie Vedder. The songs describe how Christopher must have felt throughout his journey: happy and wanting to shout out loud his feeling of freedom and sometimes feeling deeply lonely or revolted against that society made of lies and hypocrisy (”Society I hope you’re not angry if I disagree”). That what makes this soundtrack so touching, it is about pure human feelings, this can not let you insensitive. This is definitely a recommended soundtrack and movie as well. Very inspiring reflections on how you fit in the society.
