The usage of sample is not very new, started somewhere in the late 70’s, probably around NYC or so experts say. New techniques, new instruments, audio samples have evolved, coming to an extensive use with artists such as 2 many DJ’s and The Avalanches. Video samples have been a bit harder to manipulate and certainly the media were not as versatile as for audio. But here again things have changed, you can now found great video mixes bringing a high level of creativity together with high quality. To illustrate this, a video by giovannisample.com
I was just stunned when I saw this, just amazing. Hope you like it too.
That’s nothing new to you? Sure, I agree. This video just reminded me of a CD I borrowed few years ago, “Let us replay” by Coldcut (always 10 years ahead, that was in 1999). On this CD they had a demo version of a software they developed: “VJAMM”. With it you could create your own movie clips based on video samples, just amazing. Just that in 99 my computer was not powerful enough to support this
If you saw Coldcut at Roskilde ‘06, that was just an amazing show with such a precision and control of the samples. If you want to see how ahead of their time they were, here’s a video/track they made back in ‘98, also a shock when I first saw this. Also carrying strong political messages, tryColdcut’s Timber wait for the woman’s voice to bewitch you.
See you next week.
